LMS: add courses, manage groups and grades

Add a course to an LMS course, understand accounts created via the LMS, map your teams to LMS groups and track the grade sent back.

In Administer your platform

Once your LMS is connected, your Complement courses can be added to its courses. Accounts, teams and grades then follow the LMS.

Before you start#

  • Your LMS is connected to Complement: see Connect your LMS with LTI 1.3.
  • To open from the LMS, a course must be published and assigned to one of the learner's teams: the default LMS team, or a team mapped to one of their LMS groups. Otherwise, the learner sees "You do not have access to this course" and "Contact your administrator."

Add a course to an LMS course#

Courses are added through your LMS's content selection.

  1. In a course in your LMS, add an activity with the Complement tool, then start the content selection.
  2. Complement opens on the list of your courses. Click the course to add.
  3. You return to the LMS: the activity has the course's title.

Complement also asks the LMS to create a grade item out of 100, named after the course.

A teacher or administrator of the LMS who opens Complement from the LMS gets a Trainer account, unless they already have an account in your teaching team with the same email address.

If this option is turned on for your platform, a course's Settings show an LTI card with an Integration link. This link opens the course after signing in with a Complement account, without creating an account or sending back a grade. Turning on the LTI integration turns it off.

Accounts created via the LMS#

The first time they open Complement from the LMS, the learner gets a Complement account. They have no password to create and receive no email.

  • Their first name and last name come from the LMS, as does their email address if the LMS shares it. Without an email address, the list of learners shows Created via LMS.
  • If a learner on your platform already has an account with the same email address, that account is used.
  • These accounts are subject to the same seat limits as the others.
  • Their teams are managed by the LMS: you cannot move them to another team yourself.
  • They do not go through the first sign-in welcome: the onboarding course does not open by itself. To offer it to them, add it to a course in your LMS.

When the learner finishes the course, the button on the end screen sends them back to the LMS, if the LMS provided a return address.

The default LMS team#

When the integration is turned on, Complement creates the default LMS team, named "LMS Default". Anyone who opens Complement from the LMS is added to it. Assign it the courses that all your LMS users must be able to open.

You can find it in Employees › Teams: the Default team for LMS card shows its name, and it has the LMS default badge in the list. You can rename it, but you can neither delete it nor map it to an LMS group.

Map a team to an LMS group#

Your Complement account manager sets up group sync with your LMS. Administrators and Content managers then map the teams.

  1. Open Employees › Teams.
  2. In the LMS groups column, click the team's + button (Add an LMS group).
  3. In the Map an LMS group window, enter the LMS group identifier, as it appears in your LMS.
  4. Click Save mapping.

A team is mapped to a single group. To change group, click the identifier shown in the column; Delete mapping removes the link.

Each time a learner opens Complement from the LMS, Complement adds them to the teams mapped to their groups, and removes them from those they no longer belong to in the LMS. Teams without an LMS group do not change.

The grade sent back to the LMS#

If your LMS allows it, Complement sends it the progress and grade of each learner who opens the course from the LMS:

  • the first time they open it, the LMS is told that they have started the activity;
  • when they finish the course, with all its end-of-chapter quizzes passed, Complement sends their grade out of 100: their percentage of correct answers in the quizzes;
  • if they later get a better score, the grade is updated. A lower grade never replaces the best one.

If a send fails, Complement automatically tries again.
